Nurul Izzah Anwar is the current, second-term Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai. Prior to being an MP, Nurul Izzah was and still is a strong proponent of human and civil rights with a special interest in prisoners of conscience; and in the pursuit of reforms to expand Malaysia’s democratic space.
Her political career began in the aftermath of the 1998 financial and political crises - partly ignited by her father, Anwar Ibrahim's sacking, arrest and eventual beating under police custody. Anwar Ibrahim was Malaysia's Finance and Deputy Prime Minister and has been jailed under the Malaysian government four times - latest on trumped up charges of sodomy. Amnesty International has declared him a prisoner of conscience.
Nurul Izzah's political awakening was further bolstered by the emergence of multiracial People’s Justice Party (KEADILAN) in 1999 where she played a vital role in its establishment. She was elected as the party's highest ranking Vice President, and later appointed KEADILAN's Election Director - a post she jointly holds with Dato Saifuddin Nasution.
She is the founding member for the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Caucus; and Women’s Caucus respectively. She also holds the position of Honorary Treasurer on behalf of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Malaysia. She has also moved the Parliamentary Bill in the Malaysian Parliament to Revoke Emergency Declarations in the country; including the eventual abolishment of the draconian Internal Security Act – all of which were adopted by the Prime Minister six months later. Granted, other laws were then re-introduced; in line with Malaysia’s semi autocratic regime.
Nurul Izzah holds a Masters Degree in International Relations with a concentration on Southeast Asia from the School for Advanced International Studies, Johns-Hopkins University. She amplifies her busy schedule by managing her two young children - Safiyah and Harith.
